Balsam Fir
(Abies balsamea)

  • Coniferous

  • Most abundant tree in Maine

  • Height: 60-70 feet

  • Trunk Diameter: 12-20 inches

  • Bark: young trees are gray and smooth with prominent bumps while older trees have bark that is rougher and not bumpy

  • Leaves: needles that are 1 inch long and dark green in color

  • Cones: 2-4 inches long and point upwards on the tree

  • Indigenous name: puhpukhawihqimus
