When is the Black House Museum open?
Hours: Wednesday-Saturday 10AM-4PM. Please note that the museum might be closed during these hours for a private group tour or a program. Please check the event page for additional information.
How do I book a tour of the museum?
There are different types of tours offered, guided and audio tours.Audio tours: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. These are purchased at the door. Guided tours: Thursday at 10AM, 11AM, 12PM, 1PM, 2PM, 3PM.Tickets for guided tours can be purchased ahead under the EVENT tab or at the door, if space is available.
How do I book a group tour?
Please email director@woodlawnellsworth.org or call 207-667-8671 to arrange a private group tour. Please give us ample notice so we can plan accordingly for your visit.
When do tour tickets go on sale?
Guided tour tickets for the 2026 season are available to purchase on the event page of the website.
Audio tour tickets can be purchased when you visit.
The museum is opening for the season on May 27.
Can I buy my tickets when I arrive?
Yes, we try to make sure there is always room for a few drop ins. However, if the tour is full, walking the grounds is delightful while you wait for the next available tour. Please plan ahead to make sure we can accommodate you!
What is the cost of a ticket to tour the museum?
Guided Tours (~1 hour)
- $15 adults
- Children under 16 are free
- Free for active military and their families
Audio Tours (~45 minutes)
- $10 adults
- Children under 16 are free
- Free for active military and their families
Do you offer refunds?
All tickets are non-refundable.
How long does it take to tour the museum?
Guided tours are about 50 minutes and the audio tour takes about 45 minutes.
Is the museum accessible?
Please note that tours last approximately 45 minutes and include periods of standing, walking, and climbing stairs. Visitors with limited mobility may enjoy a first-floor tour, along with a visual tour of the second floor, without having to navigate the large historic staircase. Modern chairs are available in the museum for visitors who would like to sit during portions of the tour. Please be aware that the historic site is not equipped with ramps, elevators, or lifts. The museum is not air-conditioned.
Are there public restrooms available?
There is a restroom available in the gift shop area for customers visiting the museum.
Can I take photographs in the museum?
Non-flash, non-commercial photography is allowed in the museum. We do not allow video, selfie sticks, or tripods in the museum for the safety of the guides, other visitors, and the collection.
Do you have a place to leave bags during the tour?
We do not allow large bags or backpacks in the museum during tours due to the possibility of bumping into items in the collection. We do not have a place to store them during your tour.
Are strollers allowed in the museum?
Due to limited space in the hallways, we do not allow strollers in the museum. We do not have a place to store strollers during your tour.
