Red Spruce
(Picea rubens)

  • Coniferous

  • Height: 60-80 feet

  • Trunk Diameter: 1-2 feet

  • Bark: older trees are thick and made up of reddish-brown irregular scales

  • Leaves: needles that are dark green and often very shiny

    • 1/2 inch long and feel prickly to the touch​

  • Cones: oblong, 1.5 to 2 inches long and egg shaped

  • Used in the production of building lumber

  • Shade tolerant

  • Indigenous name: olonatoq
